A Bit of Nonsense

Nonsense poetry is light and rhythmical, written for children, but enjoyed by all, depicting unusual characters in fantastical predicaments. Whimsical and humorous, they employ fanciful phrases and meaningless made-up words.
When I was eleven, I was taught this verse and it has remained in my mind ever since. I believe it was published in a little book called A Popple in Your Pocket. I’m not certain if the title is correct, or the heading, or the entire verse for that matter.
Please amend if there aren't mistakes ;)

I come before you to stand behind you
and tell you something I know nothing about.
Next Thursday, the day after Friday,
there will be a ladies' meeting for men only.
Wear your best clothes
if you haven't any,
and if you can come, please stay home.
Admission is free, you can pay at the door.
We'll give you a seat, so you can sit on the floor.
It doesn’t matter where you sit,
the kid in the gallery is sure to spit.

  1. I had to learn quite a few classic, i.e. serious, poems as a child. I've forgotten them all. However I can still recite Eletelephony by heart.
